The earthquake had occurred thousands of miles away in the Aleutian Islands. The tsunami took roughly 4.9 hours to cross the Pacific to Hawaiʻi.

UNESCO’s International Tsunami Information Center records 96 deaths and $26 million in 1946 damage in Hilo. The precision matters because catastrophe is often turned into a single commemorative statistic.

Waves struck elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands, and Laupāhoehoe’s school community carries its own devastating history.

In 1948, the United States established its first tsunami warning operation at the Honolulu Magnetic and Seismic Observatory.

Tide gauges could confirm abnormal sea-level movement.
