Its wall is therefore not only a structure. It is evidence of coordination: people selecting and moving material, reading a difficult coastal environment, organizing labor, maintaining a shared food system, and transferring knowledge.\n\nThe labor did not end when the wall was completed. Its productive capacity depends on continuous mālama: clearing channels, repairing storm damage, maintaining gates, observing fish and water, controlling predators or invasive species, coordinating harvests, and caring for relationships upstream and downstream.\n\nLoko iʻa are living systems.\n\nThe physical system at Heʻeia makes that labor legible. Paepae o Heʻeia describes a wall built in compact layers that slow water loss, preserve a base level at low tide, and concentrate more exchange through seven mākāhā. Together they help maintain brackish conditions favorable to limu and fish.\n\nRestoration practitioners face watersheds altered by development, sediment and nutrient changes, invasive species, unreliable recruitment of juvenile fish, warmer water, storms, regulation, funding constraints, and the sheer physical demand of maintaining a coastal structure.\n\nAt Heʻeia, those problems are also producing new collaborations. Researchers have studied whether native predatory fish can help control invasive mullet. Current work examines the effect of invasive upside-down jellyfish and tests management options co-developed with practitioners. Other research is investigating freshwater inputs, temperature regulation, fish populations, nutrient dynamics, and ways to acclimate hatchery-reared ʻamaʻama before release.\n\nThey do not retroactively turn the pond into a Western laboratory, nor do scientific instruments validate knowledge that required no outside validation to exist.\n\nThe stronger claim needs no exaggeration: Native Hawaiian communities developed a sophisticated aquaculture system in Hawaiʻi, and practitioners continue to restore, adapt, and govern it now.\n\nAt Heʻeia, the mākāhā offers a way into that larger idea. Fish respond to openings and tides. Community rules determine what is cared for, what is taken, and what is passed on.",
