Who is reduced to an entertainer? Which parts of a technology receive patents, museum labels, royalties, or institutional prestige? Which creators become atmosphere around somebody else’s origin story?\n\nThe next time a steel guitar bends a note through country, gospel, blues, rock, or another musical tradition, do not hear Hawaiʻi as decoration added to someone else’s music.",
